FIND OUR WAY

‘5TRACKS’ is a coworking/office space in Breda that is currently in the final stages of completion. We are working on the wayfinding for the buildings as part of its cohesive identity. This task has many complexities that require on-site problem-solving. This is why we prototype the concept and take it from there.

Debug on a trip

Our Debug chair travelled to Epernay in France to be part of ‘The Banquet of Wonders’ exhibition in Musée du vin de Champagne et d’Archéologie régionale for four months.

CHRISTMAS DINNER ’23

Time again for our yearly Christmas dinner with the team. This time we went to the ‘food capital’ Veghel. Noordkade is an industrial area that developed into a lively and cultural melting pot.

One of our classics; the Debug chair that we created by tracing the movements of ants, is part of the exhibition ‘The Banquet of Wonders’ at Musée du vin de Champagne et d’Archéologie régionale in Epernay, France.

BACK TO THE FUTURE

Currently Dutch Invertuals is running a cooperation with Schloss Hollenegg for Design by the name ‘Woodland’. It started out as an open call for designers to apply for a design residency to explore the relation between local woodworking crafts and design.

This week we had a studio visit from our friends Stacey Moran and Adam Nocek along with their students. Stacey and Adam are teaching in philosophy of technology, as part of the science and technology studies in the School of Arts, Media and Engineering at Arizona State University.

Recently we had a heads-up with Pieter of Bold Monday who told us about his work as a type designer. To top it off we had a pixel type workshop. Yay!

RECON MISSION MILAN

The world of design is rapidly changing. To stay in tune with the developments we have been visiting the Salone del Mobile for many years, as it is by far the largest event of its kind. There is simply a lot to see. Loads of ‘bad stuff’ and some ‘good stuff’. We like to scavenge from place to place to sharpen our views and scrape some inspiration. And on top of it, it’s a nice excuse to head out with the team and have some fun.

DUTCH DESIGN IN MILAN

We were pleased to be back at the infamous exhibition spot in Isola after three years, where Dutch Invertuals presented ‘Objects for a New Kind of Society: The way we work’. We met up with old and new friends and even welcomed Her Majesty Queen Máxima.

SKY HIGH

We have been working on the project 5TRACKS for a while and last month they reached their ‘highest point’. To celebrate this special moment an event has been organized for stakeholders and the councilor of Breda. We did customized artworks on the spot while invitees enjoyed drinks and snacks. We also arranged a drone race by Dutch Drone Gods, who captured the milestone in an after movie.

‘OBJECTS FOR A NEW KIND OF SOCIETY: THE WAY WE WORK’ AT SALONE DEL MOBILE

Salone del Mobile is coming up again and we’re happy to announce that after an absence of three years Dutch Invertuals is back on their infamous spot in Isola, where exhibitions started out in 2012.

Printed matter

We always put a lot of energy in creating state of the art design work. So from time to time it’s good to make field trips and check out our producers and see the latest on their capabilities. Last month we visited Drukkerij Tielen in Boxtel, who has printed several of our most elaborate books. It’s always good to align and understand the process of production, because it helps us to make adequate decisions and work efficiently.

NEO MINERALIA

Digital Geology by Edhv, as presented during DDW 2021 at the Dutch Invertuals show, is part of the NEO MINERALIA exhibition. The show at the Center for Craft is from February until October in Asheville, North Carolina.

BACK TO THE ROOTS

Every year we do our end-of-the-year dinner at an inspiring location. This time going back to the roots at Vaderland in Nuenen. A farm that brings back the ways we seem to have lost.

After the big Covid time-out we could finally set out to explore again. No inspiration, no creation, so we never pass on an opportunity to head out with the team. Salone del Mobile in Milan has been a ‘must see’ for quite a while. Not the best edition this year but still worth the trip.

Nomination City Nation Place Award: Sound of Eindhoven

A year ago we started a project together with EHV365 in search for the sound of Eindhoven. What soundtrack fits best to the city of Eindhoven? After an open call for artists and musicians over a hundred songs were submitted in for review. Now The Sound of Eindhoven has been nominated for an international City Nation Place Award, in the category Best Citizen Engagement. The grande finale is today at 18:00 CET. The Sound of Eindhoven Livestream

For The Sound of Eindhoven over a hundred soundtracks and songs were submitted. After a voting period the finalists were chosen by the public and a jury. The eight finalists performed their ‘Sound of Eindhoven’ live on stage for the award show at the Effenaar in Eindhoven. The grade finally was broadcasted live on www.thesoundofeindhoven.nl. You can still view the show on YouTube in case you missed it.

In search of The Sound

For The Sound of Eindhoven we asked musicians and producers to compose a soundtrack that reflects the identity of the city. Eight finalists were asked to do a live performance as part of the grade finally. Here’s a peek behind the scenes. The result will be live-streamed on the 16th of June. Stay tuned!

After the show in New York ‘Design by Time’ has now landed in Raleigh, North Carolina at the Gregg Museum of Art & Design.

Decade

Milan was a success once again! For its 10 Year anniversary, Dutch Invertuals invited a group of pioneering Invertuals, and a selection of emerging talents, to take on the task to redesign one of the most iconic shape in the universe: The Circle.

New York, New York, big city of …

We are happy to share that Morphodynamic and Time Writers are currently travelling with the exhibition: Design by Time by CuratorSquared. The exhibition had its first opening at Pratt Manhattan Gallery, New York earlier this February, so we took the opportunity to sneak out and explore New York!

Library of the future

Libraries or a hot topic in the age of digital. there is a worldwide shift of the institution from ‘a place of books’ to ‘a place for people.’ And everywhere its role is being redefined. Recently we presented the strategic vision of the Eindhoven library.  The intention of this presentation was an open dialogue with the people in order to incorporate their needs and ideas. Now we are heading for phase II.

Ambassadors network

During Dutch Design Week our studio was the venue of the DDW Ambassadors dinner. A dinner organised by DDW around the personal networks of the DDW ambassadors. For the occasion a special Ramen chef from Milan came over and did his thing ‘pop-up kitchen style.’

Last week week the book ‘Waarde van Cultuur’ was presented to the cultural stakeholders of Brabant. A book we worked on for the last few weeks and till the late hours. Nice to see the result live. That smell of fresh print ….

Summer vibes

Once a year we do our informal barbecue party. It’s a great way to see in the flesh some of the people that are on our LinkedIn list combine with our good friends that never fail to show up. Nothing more to it. See you next year.

Binge-watching design

It has become one of our must-visit events, Salone del Mobile in Milan. The perfect place to ‘see whats up’ and get a sense of the ‘zeitgeist.’ This years overall feel lies in the materials. There seems to be a true shift towards more sustainable concepts and focus on alternative material use.

And the Oscar goes to …

In 1963 Philips was awarded the Oscar for outstanding achievement for a groundbreaking innovation in movie projection. In retrospective of this event Philips Museum set up a compact but insightful exhibition on this topic. Edhv was given the challenge to design and produce it. Go check it out at the Museum.

Award tour

Last month we had the honor to design the culture award Eindhoven. An award handed to artists and organisations as a reward for their cultural activities. In total three awards were handed out. This is how they got made. First 3D printed, than casted in bronze, than worked by hand for refining.

Some nice test shots we made in order to get to understand the effects of clear glass marbles running over images. An effect we used for the visuals we created for the exhibition ‘Enlighten,’ by Dutch Invertuals and Luxaflex.

Detroit in the house

This week, we welcomed these young students and their mentor Doug Kisor from Michigan College for Creative Studies in Detroit, to the studio. The group is currently on a three-week studio tour and workshop trip in The Netherlands. As dedicated educator, Doug has been coordinating the annual international summer graphic design study program based in Den Haag since the ‘90s. They chose to stop by at Edhv during their one-day excursion to Eindhoven.

Universal

Eindhoven University of Technology invited Edhv to pass on our some of their knowledge about communication design to their industrial design students. Over the past three months, we gave lectures to a group of 45 young designers. Their assignment for the course? To show their acquired graphic design insight and skills by creating a bid book.

From abroad

It’s always nice to have young, ambitious people from all over the world decide to move to Eindhoven and do their internship here at Edhv. This month, we welcomed Angel, a young interior designer from Manila, the Philippines. She gave an inspiring presentation on the culture and history of the island country. Really refreshing to hear her story and learn more about demographics.

Yay! We are back from Milan and looking back at a successful week with a great atmosphere. Harvesting heat

Thermodynamic processes continue to fascinate us. For this year’s Dutch Invertuals’ exhibition at Salone del Mobile Milan, we elaborate on Frost Light by introducing a counterpart. The interplay between heat and cold will shed a new light on the project.

Smell the coffee

CoffeeLab has expanded to a new location. This month, another bar opens its doors in Den Bosch. To notify passers by we created some temporary window covers.

Harvest

Salone del Mobile is coming up and Dutch Invertuals will once again present a brand new show by the name ‘Harvest’. Edhv is part of the show so make sure you don’t miss it.

Capturing flow

As part of the Advanced Relics exhibition the ceramic tile factory was on show during the Salone del Mobile in Milan. This video shows the symphonic dynamic of the installation at work, recreating volcanic patterns. The mesmerizing process of rhythmic overflowing and draining embodies the marriage between nature and technology.

The final frontier

During a prelude event to a year full of Design Edhv was invited by the Philips Museum to do a lecture on Space Age design in support of the exhibition that is currently on show at the Museum.

Design tales

For the ninth edition of Dutch Design Daily Live, organized in collaboration with Pakhuis de Zwijger a selection was made from the archive of the online platform. With presentations by Circus Family, Dutch Invertuals, Trapped in Suburbia, Studio Tast and a column by Jacob de Baan.

Preaching what we practice

Last week Edhv was invited by Sint Lucas in Boxtel to give some insights on how the studio operates in two lectures. We always feel humbled to be able to tell something about what we do to the new generation. Good to see so much ambition and potential in there.

It is fascinating to see how people from various ages, backgrounds and cultures speculate what our future reality will be. For the 100th birthday celebration of the city library, people are invited to imagine how we will live in the year 2116. Another 10 ideas and stories were uploaded by visitors and have now been translated into 3D printed objects. The objects are currently on show in the library.

VR play date

Because we are interested in staying up to date with high-end technologies and explore their possible applications in identity design, we like to organize a try-out every once in a while.

Random Experiments #1

We love to look into topics like generative systems, natural processes and information design. Playing around with statistics. We used visitor activity from edhv.nl as input to grow real-time structures.

And then there was light

A video that captures the poetry of the Frost Light, created for the Dutch Invertuals exhibition Power Play. The idea behind it is that the energy – which can be generated through melting ice – can be translated to electricity.

Public space invasion

Share The Vibe is a video campaign that is aimed to generate a visual culture around the cities identity. Inviting Eindhovens finest to create clips. Stills from these clips are now applied in this back alley creating a kind of street gallery.

Opening Stad In Beweging

Last month the exhibition Stad In Beweging has opened for public. The exhibition is a cooperation by the main Eindhoven heritage institutes like DAF Museum, Eindhoven Museum, RHCe and Philips Museum. The exhibition shows how Eindhoven developed after the world wars, fuelled by growing industries.

Every year during Dutch Design Week the Edhv Studio turns into a restaurant for one night. The opening dinner for the Dutch Invertuals show Power Play. This time the dinner concept was developed by Nina van Bart. All courses were based on roots. And all courses needed the interaction by the guests to be distributed on a rail system placed on the table. Here is a small impression.

Our studio is blessed with visits from young and ambitious people from all over the world. We feel honored when they decide to move halfway across the globe to learn and work with us and do their internship at Edhv. On top of that the great thing is that we learn so many things from them too.

Lecture on data visualization

Edhv was invited to give a lecture about data visualization and dynamic identities at CMD Den Bosch. A good chance to give some insight into the concepting and design process we do at our studio. Hopefully we inspire more people to embrace experimentation ‘outside the computer’ in their process.

Studio visit

Once in a while we get requests for studio visits. It’s always nice when people are showing interest in our work and want to know more about it. In this case we had visitors who represent a Spanish company and who are in the process of organizing an inspiration tour.

Fully restored

Not many people remember that after the war Philips had to come up with a solution to get people to the factories. There was simply no material available to do this. So they came up with the idea of the Vipre. In the morning a personnel carrier, at day time the truck did its heavy duty, and in the evening it switched back into a personnel carrier.

Every year the show in Milan is a big adventure. Months of meetings and preparations is eventually boiled down to one compact truckload on it’s way to the global design capital. And once it has arrived on its destination and the truck is onloaded, the process of building begins like a big burst of built up energy. Rushing to see if it all works out what we have been talking and planning about. Every edition feels like a big collective spatial work of art and it feels great.

for Fontys Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Tilburg we are going to be supervising the graduation show concept in terms of communication and exhibition design. In order to start off the project we gave a lecture on the value of group dynamic and presentation.

Eindhoven cabinet

A work in progress here. This 3.5 meter tall cabinet is based on the roadmap of Eindhoven city and functions as part of the Eindhoven 2116 project. It will be put up in the public library of Eindhoven.

Eindhoven 2116

The Eindhoven Public Library is celebrating its 100th birthday. For this event we are doing a project that will cover the whole year. We will invite the citizens to share their visions for Eindhoven in 2116. Visitors can scan their future ideas to a database and add them to a wall of vision. The greatest ideas we will translate into three-dimensional objects and will be added to a big alternative bookshelf that is placed in the centre of the library.

Code, wires and wood

More and more we see the application of technology enter the projects we work on. It’s no longer limited to programming for on-screen solutions. It gets embedded into objects and becomes part of our approach. doing so this opens a vast array of new possibilities.

History in the making

For the exhibition ‘Her City’ about the role of women during the interbellum in the city of Eindhoven, we are working out the graphics and interior concept. The exhibition will take place at Designhuis. More soon.

At the end of a great Dutch Design Week it’s good to celebrate and have fun after all this hard work. Why are we always out of beer way to early?

Edhv at Parsons

Here is an impression of an exhibition ‘Stereotype’ currently on show in New York, Sept. 30 through Dec. 15. It contains two of our projects. ‘Wordigami,’ originally created for the first show of Dutch Invertuals in Milan, and ‘Burners’ that was first presented at the Dutch Invertuals show ‘Untouchable.’ So if you happen to be in New York these days, don’t forget to have a peek.

Interior

For the october editions of Eigen Huis & Interieur there was a photo shoot on design from Eindhoven in our studio. Nice to see so many objects together in one place for a day.

Trial and error

An exploration into movement in design and design processes was the starting point for the show ‘No Static’ by Dutch Invertuals. A day of playing on the beach inspired us to explore Morphodynamics. Our lab team researched and iterated eventually bringing in the technology. Next to that we even brought in the material mastery of Carlo Lorenzetti to help out in this crazy project, because ceramics is not the easiest material to understand and work with. In the end this all lead to the ‘ceramic tile factory’ we presented.

The making of the cosmic creatures

For the latest edition of Dutch Invertuals exhibition by the title ‘No Static’ we created portraits of all participating designers. First scanning them to get an initial 3D file. From there moulding them into cosmic creatures with each of them a character of their own.

Living in a box

Nice to see some of our works being incorporated in the Eigen Huis & Interieur presentation during the Woonbeurs in Amsterdam. The space was designed by i29 interior architects. It contained the work of: Daphna Laurens, Studio Job, Mieke Meijer, Jaime Hayon, Raw Color, Jetske Visser, Jeroen Wand, Edhv and others.

Lily

One of our latest gates representing a lily is being installed. This is gate number eight and there is one left to go.

Field trip

In August the Edhv team took the liberty to sneak out for a field trip to the 2015 Venice Art Biennale. It proved to be a rich source for inspiration over the last decade so we decided not to miss out on this one.

Last week a photoshoot for a leading Dutch interior design magazine took place in our studio for a special edition on product design from Eindhoven. It was great to see all this stuff coming in to be professionally styled by their team. The Magazine should be out in october.

At the campus of Maxima Medisch Centrum in Veldhoven one building gets a total make over. The building will house a range of medical innovation start-ups in the near future. We made a new skin that is being applied as we speak and will be ready by the end of this week.

TEDx Maastricht Salon

Today we paid a visit to the TEDx Maastricht Salon. Maastricht Lab hosted this event that took place in an abandoned church. Edhv provided the graphical support to the occasion. And nice to see Daan Melis doing his talk on ‘City Making’ in Eindhoven.

Getthebuzz Milan

Field testing Getthebuzz in Milan during the Salone del Mobile. After the pilot during the Dutch Design Week last october we took it a level up to see how it would work at and international large scale event.

Since 2013 we have been working on a digital publishing concept. Together with the Province of Brabant we launched the first Pilot of Getthebuzz.nl During DDW 2014. This concept was developed for enhancing the live experience and embedding of an event in its local context by channeling social media as well as self generated content in one overview. It functions like a subjective real-time digital newspaper and shows everything that is happening during the event through the eyes of the visitors and reporters.

Goodbye

One of the things that keeps happening is those goodbye moments when interns are leaving. After months of hard work they are like a part of the team. So it’s often with a double emotion that we say farewell. On one side ‘hate to see them go’ on the other side ‘curious how their careers will turn out.’ they come from far these days. We had interns from: France, England, Russia, Poland, Japan, Bulgaria, Italy, Canada, Singapore, Denmark, United States, Brazil not to forget the many Dutch off course. And the list keeps on growing like a global family.  It keeps us dynamic. They come and learn from us as much as we learn from them. It’s a big privilege to work with them and be able to play a little role in their development as designers. Maybe that’s why the barbeque has become like a goodbye ritual at our studio. If the weather is good off course.

Setting up shows in Milan is starting to become a routine. After all the stuff arrived by truck and all Dutch Invertuals arrive by plane the briefing for the exhibition begins. This time, hanging 80 lights is the challenge. In the mean time the promotional items are being prepared and flyers sorted out. When everything is set another briefing about each individual work takes place so everyone can represent everyone to the fullest.

Milan #1

Edhv has sent a delegation to Milan to represent and promote Getthebuzz, the media platform we have piloted during the Dutch Design Week. The Milan edition is a cooperation with Dutch Invertuals and also an extensive field test during this international big scale event Salone Del Mobile.

Dutch Masters

This bus will travel back and forth over the A2 highway between Eindhoven Airport and Amsterdam coming years. A perfect surface to promote two of our Iconic Brabanders; Vincent van Gogh and Jheronimus Bosch.

Our team has been working hard to put it all together. it has been an honour to work on the subject of such a great artist. to be able to get a glimpse into his motivations and help proving the relevance of his work and life to this day.

Building up for the exhibition called ‘The Vincent Affair’ that will open next week at the historic location Nune Ville. Nune Ville used the be the home to Margot Begemann. The woman Vincent Van Gogh was in a relation with during his time in Nuenen.

City talk

In relation to Glow, an art event in light technology, we have been invited to give an inspiring talk on this event in relation to the urban development of the city and about parallels with other regions with a strong focus on technology. Our recent visit to Boston, Cambridge and Somerville came in really handy. A nice opportunity to explain some of the plans we have for the future as well.

Ten year anniversary

Edhv celebrated it’s ten year anniversary last week. A nice excuse to throw a little party. Preparing for it is half the fun.

Recon mission Milan

Last week we went to Milan to pave the way for the new show of Dutch Invertuals. We checked out several spaces in the area as possible extra venues during the Salone de Mobile. Next to that we had various meetings with interesting  people. It’s nice to extend our network in Milan. Of course we could find some time to visit the exhibitions at La Triennale. Alway worth paying a visit. This time it had a good show on design in years of crisis.

The chop shop

We paid a little visit to the workshop of SIEMei at CHV Noordkade. A workshop that is run by retired works men of the former CHV company. They are applying their skills to one of our signing objects for CHV Noordkade.

Out there

Sometimes when working on projects its good to go out for inspiration. Like in this case, browsing through the woods for material. This will somehow find it’s way into one of our new projects.

DI Talks #01

Because its always useful to expand our knowledge on topics we don’t know much about Dutch Invertuals started a series of self educational lectures. the first DI Talk was about Luminescent Solar Concentrators. A material that is being researched and developed at the Technical University of Eindhoven. Coming straight from the lab it offers a range of uncharted possibilities for application in design.

Lose some weight

After years of loyal service we have decided to part with a large amount of our books and magazines. They were just sitting there on the shelves watching time fly by and collecting dust by the miles. So we donated them to the next generation to come. A post on the Design Academy student network set off a frenzy. Now we have design students dropping by to make their pick for the last couple of days. Feels good to lose some weight like that.

Vroaam lecture

BNO organises an event for young start-ups called VROAAM. This years edition took place in Utrecht. Wendy Plomp was invited to tell the story of Dutch Invertuals. How it all started and how it turned into a well known collective with a reputation for visionary works.

Biosphere

Our little indoor Edhv cabins finally came to reality. They are built for climate control. They are easier to keep warm when its freezing during winter and easier to cool down during the ever hotter summers. They are also modular and portable.

Root lecture

Last week we have been invited to a lecture dedicated to the professional practice of the designer and how a young graduates can find their way into the world of design. With guest speakers: Wendy Plomp (Curator at Dutch Invertuals), Remco van de Craats (creative director at Edhv), Floor Kuitert, (editor at FRAME magazine). ROOT Expositions in Rotterdam is aiming to provide a platform for students and alumni of the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam.

Subliminal power of city fonts

Today a nice article appeared in The Guardian about the typeface for the city of Eindhoven and how type design can influence the identity of a city.

Boston, Cambridge, Somerville

Arrived in Boston to stay in a cosy apartment in Cambridge Massachusetts for a week full of meetings, studio visits, guest lectures, exhibition opening etc. A great chance to check out the MIT and Harvard campus and see how these institutes influence their urban surroundings. Our apartment is located just yards away from Mass Ave near Porter Square. Well worth strolling down all the way to Central. Especially Harvard square is a fun place to check out.

StereoType is a groundbreaking exhibition that presents works by an array of 14 established and up-and-coming designers from the United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, France, the United States, Israel, The Netherlands, Germany, and Australia. By exploring the opportunities at the intersection of technology and design, this new breed of artists is expanding the boundaries of traditional typography and integrating elements from the fields of animation, craft, performance, nanoscience, and graffiti into their work. Curated by Ginger Gregg Duggan and Judith Hoos Fox of c² curatorsquared, the exhibition heralds a departure from conventional typographical approaches focused on two-dimensional letters by incorporating the elements of time, movement, and the third dimension.

Dutch Invertuals dinner

This year not one but two traditional Dutch Invertuals dinners took place at the Edhv studio. Always a nice way to celebrate the exhibition, invite guests and meet people.

Take a stand

The making of promotional displays for a housing corporation. Its a modular and mobile system and can be set up in many different ways. So the set up needs to be tested for any final adjustments.

Under construction

The building site of the new Eindhoven brand store was sealed off with a wooden fence that asked people to leave their mark with chalks. It triggered a lot of creative outbursts and the images changed every day.

Debate on culture

Our studio served as venue for a debate on culture in Eindhoven. People from a diverse range of cultural institutions as well as representatives from the local governments attended the gathering to have their say. Turned out the debate was more about money than about culture.

City making

Edhv congratulates EHV365 and the city of Eindhoven with winning the national award for city marketing. Good to see this joint effort is bearing its fruit. Glad to be part in it.

Linking Parts at Grand Hornu

Edhv was invited by Transnatural to show their debug project as part of the ‘Linking Parts’ exhibition at the amazing site Grand Hornu in Belgium. During the official opening bugs were doing their part again in producing a limited run of prints. If you happen to be interested in obtaining one, just give us a call.

If you happen to be at the Dutch Invertuals show in Milan. Ask for the Lookbook. It’s a vast and brutal overview of five years blood, sweat, tears and tons of awesomeness. Amazing what can be achieved in such a short time. The lookbook serves as a prelude to the publishing of a Dutch Invertuals book later this year.

Delegation

We had the honour to receive a group of international guests at our Edhv studio. The group consisted of six selected artists, social designers and engineers from Guatemala, Kenia, Indonesia and Nicaragua. In their daily practice, all of them strongly focus on experiment, research and social innovation. They will return to Eindhoven for a residency in September and October.

Next level

A nice article about the concept we have worked on for Belvedair. Farm Food & Drinks represents the Brabant feeling and has the absolute best coffee around the airport. So next time you fly, have a break at one of their bars.

As we are working on lettering for a monumental building, one can’t be to sure to get the best results. The company that does the production made a test set up to judge the materials, lights, measurements and color. We can’t wait to see it up there.

Powering up

Dutch Invertuals are powering up again for the next exhibition at Spazio O’, Milan. These meetings turn out to be valuable food for thoughts. so stay tuned for the next one.

City in progress

Maastricht-Lab organized a symposium about the new reality in urban redevelopment. throughout Maastricht several experiments were conducted over the last two years. The results could be seen in an organized Lab-safari along all the redevelopment locations.

Hell of a ride

After six years of blood sweat and tears our colleague Jeroen Braspenning decided to leave the Mothership and go rogue. So watch out. Saying goodbye is never easy but these things are all in the game. Ask him for the book we made for the occasion. It’s a vast overview of all adventures, crazy overnight sessions, mad posing and ridiculous moments. Amazing what can happen in six years. It’s been a hell of a ride.

Beyond

Our epic moments in Budapest made it all the way to Japan. It got a nice feature in Axis magazine. Beyond Data was a super interesting exchange project and collaboration between Baltan laboratories and Kitchen Budapest. We did a deep dive into the world of data and beyond.

Invertuals party at Edhv

Friday night, the traditional private Dutch Invertuals party at the Edhv studio during the Dutch Design Week. Here is a little impression. Thank you for coming. You guys went Bar Basso on us. All alcohol in a 3 mile radius seemed to be completely absorbed. It was a blast. We hope to see you next year.

New website up

We are proud to present our new website. Clean and simple. Just the way we like it. With many new projects and some new functionalities. We are still filling content and making final adjustments as we speak. If you run in to some bugs please send us a note and we will fix it. Have fun.

Revaluate

During Dutch Design Week 2013 Dutch Invertuals will once again present new work at the Edhv headquarter. So will Edhv. This time we ventured out into the algorithms of nature and physics. The project ‘Roots’ is a research into the possibilities of organic esthetics, living patterns and generated functionalities. So make sure not to miss this one.

At Grafik 13 in Zürich, Switzerland , Edhv was invited to present its Debug project. For three days in a row our bugs were running live graphics. For this edition we worked with some Swiss style icons like the Swiss cross, Helvetica and the public transport map of Zürich.

Today we received some snapshots from the exhibition preparations of Graphic Happiness that is on tour in China at the moment. It features several Edhv projects like: Debug 2d, Debug 3d, Burn Baby Burn, De Buitenwereld, Time Writers and  House For Visual Culture. We will keep you posted.

The traditional Dutch Invertuals show that serves as kick of for the exhibition during Dutch Design Week was build around the theme of Conflict. In this case, fast food versus slow food. It was good to see so many guests really enjoying the food and conversation it provoked.

We went on a three day trip to Documenta 13 in Kassel, Germany with the crew to see what’s up.

Metalheads

Experimenting with screen-printing metals. By mixing the metals with acid and salt the oxidation sets in and produces different colours. No pigments were used. The oxidation process takes about a week. More on this soon.

Funky technicians

For the International Architecture Biennial Rotterdam we built an interactive game called Upload Eindhoven. The game is created together with Urhahn Urban Design and based on a research on redevelopment areas in Eindhoven. Users can playfully upload their data into the game and influence the development of the city.

Report from Milan

The 5th Dutch Invertuals exhibition. Another great show, cool party and fantastic week during the Salone in Milan. The build up went pretty smooth. Except for some bad karma with the van (it was broken into, tagged on and keys got lost) everything was very nice. Proud to be part of it.

Bank job

The Moonlife Concept Store has landed at the Rabo Kunstzone in Utrecht as part of a exhibition with works by Alicia Framis.

Bit rushed

After The Bitrush exhibition took place late last year at the MU in Eindhoven. For this Exhibition we created a digital fungus that interacts with plants. The projection lives on the green leaves supplying it with light. A coexistence between the fungus and the plant.

Green Line

A studie on a de effect and possibilities of a subway line from Eindhoven Airport all the way down to Central Station and the university campus. This was part of a project to investigate the location of a Transferium on the edge of Eindhoven

Make your own tools

Baltan Laboratory organized a lecture about generative design at our studio. Interesting topics were addressed by Eric de Haas and Jonathan Puckey who worked on a generative tool for the new visual identity of Baltan Lab.  Edhv presented their new tool that generates the visual identity of ‘Huis Voor Beeldcultuur.’ Both seem to be explorations in the scope of new possibilities that designers work with nowadays.

Grand opening

Invited by Baltan Laboratory to attend and present at a five day intensive workshop/lecture on data visualization in Budapest. Amazingly talented people doing next level stuff in this media laboratory funded by a Hungarian telecom company. Check them out.

Enter the Void

Edhv hosted a meeting about vacant buildings the for Dutch Green Building Council. The evening featured three speakers on this topic and several presentations of transition concepts.

DDW / Dutch Invertuals

Preparing for the new edition of the Dutch Invertuals exhibition. Come check it out and get your limited edition souvenir of the late medieval wooden gate of Eindhoven (a.k.a. De Woenselsche Poort) here. The show started of with an out of the ordinary dinner and a sneak preview for the guests. Wood from the excavated medieval city gate of Eindhoven was transformed into new design projects. Here are some impressions of the Dutch Invertuals party. Thanks for joining see you all next time.

Delegation

An international delegation of the ISEA 2010 was invited to visit Eindhoven and get acquainted to some of the E-culture projects that are going on here. Baltan Laboratories asked us to tell the delegation something about our Debug project.

Zine culture

This came in today. Some footage of the opening of the De Zines exhibition in Madrid. It is an overview exhibition and magazine culture and was curated by Roberto Vidal and Oscar Martin. The magazine featured are Edhv/Brln, Edhv/Zrch, Edhv/Mln, Edhv/Mdrd and LEAD Magazine.

Decoded

Edhv was invited to show debug at the Graphic Design Festival Breda. Other participants where: Perongeluk, Studio Smack, Jeroen Holthuis, LUST, sndrv, Julius von Bismarck & Benjamin Maus (DE), Fabrica (IT) en Laikafont (CH). The theme of the show was decoding. we decided to make digital digits with the help of our little friends, the crickets the beetles and the woodlice.

Vernissage

Coneheads

We teamed up with Wendy Plomp (WND) who had the project “Papercave” in Milan. We put up hundreds of paper cones to create this surreal space. It will be up during the fashion week in Milan at the exhibition space of the Verger shop.

Augmented

For a recent project we are working on two augmented reality interfaces, for both the website and the live-event. The software is based upon the open-source ARToolKit class for the event and FLARToolKit for the website.  23 unique barcodes are defined for the 23 icons of eindhoven, based upon this barcode the correct 3D model and information needs to be shown.

Dutch Invertuals

On Friday evening at Edhv, before the official opening on saturday, we had a business preview. Up until moments before the dinner party, the Dutch Invertuals were putting the finishing touches on the exhibit. Every participant of the exhibition invited two guests for the dinner. The concept by House Of Origin was based on a colour scheme. If you were fed up with red you could move on to green and so on. It was a great experience. Also Lead Magazine has officially launched! And the same time this was the kick off for the Dutch Invertuals exhibition during the Dutch Design Week. We were honoured to present the first issue to Mary Fiers on behalf of municipality Eindhoven.

The launch of LEAD

During the Dutch Design Week, Edhv’s warehouse will be filled with excitement. We will kick off with the opening of the Dutch Invertuals exhibition and the launch of LEAD magazine on Saturday the 17th of October. LEAD will be presented to special guests. Moreover we will provide sneak previews on the website all week long. Never a dull moment from the 17th until the 25th of October. We hope you will stop by.

Tribute to Michael

We were shocked to hear that we lost one of the biggest legends on the face of the earth. He inspired many of us with his music and moves for over three generations. We felt we needed to do something to pay respect to this colorful person.

Exhibitionism

This is an impression from the Dutch Invertuals exhibition in Milan that took place during the Salone del Mobile. An interesting bunch of designers somehow felt the urge to work together and present their stuff to a worldwide audience. What can I say: “It was a great week.”

Child’s play

For this years annual report of Trudo we called in the help of some very young talents. We decided to make all the diagrams like colour plates and handed them over to some children. They added their own colourful interpretation to all these abstract shapes. We then put back the information and put them into the report. Result will be up soon…

Homegrown

This is the first test run for growing an corporate identity for ‘De Buitenwereld’ a new restaurant concept in the Eindhoven region. It involves plants growing through paper. Here we are trying different kinds of plants. In a few weeks we’re able to harvest.

So much fun

Our colleagues of HeyHeyHey and Too Much Fun Club invited 15 designers to do a design for a top layer on a limited edition silkscreen printed poster. Sjoerd Koopmans and Remco van de Craats of the Edhv team did one poster each. Sjoerd just couldn’t stop laughing. Remco decided to turn the poster into a party outfit. Anyways, fun we had. Check out the party pirates.

Shapeshifters

Only one week to go and Salone del Mobile will take place in Milan. Last weeks we have been working on a presentation for Lebesque. They will present six pieces of furniture in Zona Tortona. Here you see some of the sketch ideas and shapes for the room.

You must learn

After a presentation about Edhv at the “Willem de Koning” Academy by Remco van de Craats, the student were given some old school homework. The assignment was to make a poster of the title from a given Hip hop track from the late eighties. There were some restrictions. It was not allowed to use an existing typeface. If an image was to be used it had to be self made. The mission was to save the hip hop culture from it’s clichés.

New ALRT style

A new season for ALRT at the Effenaar. Another 6 editions. We created a new way of dealing with the promotional campaign. Here you can see some of the sketches and tests made for the posters and flyers. Everything is cut out by hand in order to give it the analog feel. So keep an eye out for the final posters and flyers. They will be up soon.

EDHV/MDRD

The Mdrd taskforce consisting of: Daan Melis, Kim Hemmes, Bart Haans, Jeroen braspenning, Sjoerd Koopmans, Lenneke Heeren, Raffaela Vandermühlen and Remco van de Craats, Went to Madrid to try and capture the city with pen and paper. The weather was nice but in the shadow it was freezing cold. After a few hours it was impossible to draw because our hands were to cold.

Zig zag zombie

During the DDW we participated in a type workshop by Underware. Together with people from Spain, Germany, Italia, Japan, we experimented 1 day with materials available on roles like tape, paper, foil, etc. The second day we had to apply the type on a location somewhere in the city.
The results and approaches were surprisingly diverse.

Wordwide DDW

During the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven we take part in an exhibition which takes place in an old garage in the centre of Eindhoven. Together with Hell Shop, Onnomatopee, Roots, Greytones, Daily Whatever.

The Greve files

What you see here are the proposals for a Greve Offset promotional card. Basically we created 6 different graphic patterns which will be printed in different order allowing it to be a highly variable graphic in terms of colors and materials used. In this way we can use it to show the craftsmanship of the printing profession.

Space primitives

First tests of our Moon Life Tableware. Based on the energy of an impact. This is the ceramic part. next up is the glass part. The pieces will be on show in the Moon Life Concept Store in Shanghai.

Here we are silkscreen printing and experimenting with a special ink to make a book cover. The ink is developed by Ruben Esser for his graduation project at the design academy. The ink “grows” when it’s heated and becomes a rubber, foam-like material.

Weapons of mass communication

Dutch design week is starting soon. We produced 15 different business cards to promote our Etropolis project that will take place at our office. These cards will be scattered all over Eindhoven. Stay tuned for the Etropolis website, it will be online soon…

Transmission

Last edition of “Transmissie” was held at Edhv HQ, friday 25th of August. About sixty guests were here to view two presentations. The first was a presentation about ‘Het Marcus Mysterie’ by the director of the play. The second presentation was our own project “Etropolis.” Two interesting presentations. The atmosphere was nice and open. Also it was good to see our office transformed in a kind of conference/exhibition setting.

Wall Lichttoren

Old buildings, new ideas. Together with a group of artists and designers we painted 6 full days under blistering sun conditions. We did a concept for a building site fence.
The first part was the background graphic which defied the perception of perspective in some parts. It also reacted to the surroundings in size and colour.
For the second part the artists and designers added a layer in which they reacted on the provided background. This resulted in a giant collage of different contemporary styles.

Freelancer BBQ

And yet another edition of our freelance meetings. If you were there, thanks for coming. If you weren’t there you’re probably not one of our freelancers or you had a really good reason not to be there. As you can see even Tattoo Greg was showing his portfolio to Daan.

It’s about time

This is the first part of an exhibition about ideas concerning the ‘Blue carpet’. The old Philips area in the city. This particular piece by Remco van de Craats is based on streetlevel communication. It shows the interpretation of three different people that walk around a square in Eindhoven. The images are like street level micromarketing. Stickers, tags and car brands. These items are defining the identities of the streets by constantly sending a message. It depends on the receiver what to make of them.

MLN objects

These are some of the objects we created on our Milan expedition. We asked several visitors from the furniture design fair to describe their most loved or hated objects. Based on those description we tried to recreate the objects with materials at hand.

Edhv/Brln trip

Convinced with the idea that working is no longer place bound, we set out to prove our point. Off we went to work in Berlin for a few days with the whole team. Our goal was to work together with a friended design studio from Berlin and create a magazine. Sounds easy doesn’t it? Well, it turned out to be a valuable lesson to remember.
